17% of children in this country are malnourished

The Colombo Medical Research Institute says that a recent survey has revealed that 17% of children in the country are malnourished today.

They believe that the reason for this situation is the restriction of food consumption by the people due to the economic crisis in the country.

The National Survey revealed that 200,000 children under the age of five and 700,000 school children are malnourished, said Dr. Renuka Jayatissa, Chief Nutrition Specialist in the Nutrition Division of the Colombo Medical Research Institute.

She also says that calcium deficiency has increased dramatically and that about 50 percent of children suffer from calcium deficiency, which is a new condition.

It is important to keep in mind that if the country’s economic situation deteriorates further, it could face even more serious crises in the future.
