Today marks the 17th anniversary of the tsunami disaster.
Accordingly, National Safety Day is scheduled to be held at district level islandwide today (26) to commemorate the victims of the tsunami disaster and various disasters.
The Disaster Management Center states that the National Safety Day is planned to be held with limited participation in view of the Kovid epidemic situation in the country.
The tsunami disaster of December 26, 2004 killed at least 35,000 people and left 5,000 missing.
Also, 5,002,456 persons belonging to 235,145 families in 34 Divisional Secretariat Divisions were affected by the tsunami disaster and the social, economic, cultural and environmental damage caused by it is immeasurable.
However, every year since 2005, December 26 has been declared National Safety Day and a two-minute silence is observed in memory of the lives lost in the tsunami disaster.
Accordingly, today (26) also in the morning. Silence was observed from 09.25 am to 09.27 am for 2 minutes.
