It is reported that the Joint Postal Trade Union Front has stated that it is now impossible to maintain the public services provided through post offices.

Its convener Mr. KM Chinthaka Bandara said that this situation has been caused by the decisions made by the government and the postal administration as well as not providing proper solutions to the existing problems.

“There has been no recruitment for the postal department in almost 10 years. There should be nearly 5,000 officers but nearly 2,000 are maintained as vacancies. The provision of public services has become a big problem in that. Also, gratuities, pensions and various government payments are made especially to the public. There has been a big problem this month about the money needed to make these payments. The treasury did not provide the necessary money on time and the money management system has been changed. The recruitment of field officers has been stopped. As a result, the problem of delivering letters on a daily basis is gradually emerging.”
