It is reported that the gate that releases water to the Kanti Lake installed in the Suriya Lake located at Suriyapura in the Kantale Divisional Secretariat has been broken due to bad weather conditions.
The Department of Irrigation states that due to this reason, many houses in the Suriyapura area have been flooded and the Kantale Serunuwara road has also been flooded.
Mr. S. A. Chinthaka S. Suraweera, Kantale Irrigation Engineer, mentioned that elephants are constantly moving over the embankment at the place where the gate is installed, and this may have caused the gate to break due to bad weather conditions.
It is reported that as a temporary solution to control the flowing water and prevent houses and the road from flooding, the security forces and the villagers have put sandbags together and closed it.
