The Department of Measurement Units, Standards and Services states that a metering program for taxis will be launched from the 1st of February.
The Director of the department SN Akurantilake stated that the model approval should be obtained from the department before checking the suitability, production or sale of the taxi for suitability for commercial use.
The department has pointed out that the sale and installation of models of taxis is permitted only to those companies which have obtained model approval and not to obtain taxi meters from companies that do not.
The Department of Measurement Units, Standards and Services has further stated that steps will be taken to set up mobile taxi meter service centers to check taxi meters at the Divisional Secretariat level and to affix an identification sticker to approved taxi meters.
The locations where mobile service centers have been set up at the Divisional Secretariat level and the dates on which the service will be operational are given below.
Also, taxi drivers who are unable to attend on the relevant days will be able to avail this service continuously from the beginning of March on the public days held on Mondays at the relevant District Secretariat.
