Due to the bad weather conditions in the country these days, some areas of the island have been affected by minor floods.
The Irrigation Department stated that the water levels in Kelani, Kalu, Ging, Nilwala, Mahaweli and Maha Oya and Attanagalu Oya have risen rapidly.
The department further points out that there is a risk of severe flooding due to heavy rainfall in the upper reaches of the Maha Oya Basin.
However, it is reported that there has been a minor flood in the low-lying areas of the Mahaoya Valley in the Divisional Secretariat Divisions of Alavwa, Divulapitiya, Mirigama, Pannala, Wennappuwa, Negombo, Katana, Narammala and Dankotuwa.
The Irrigation Department warns that this minor flood may turn into a major flood.
Therefore, the department has further stated that the people in those areas should be very careful.
