The dates for the local government elections are fixed.

The Chairman of the Election Commission Mr. Nimal G Punchiheva said that the power to announce the date of the local government election will be transferred to his commission in the future.
He has indicated that the official tenure of local government bodies has been extended by one year and that period will end on March 25 next year.
He made these comments while participating in an event held in Colombo.
He further mentioned that the date of the election will be announced after the 20th of September.
