THE EFFECT OF THE NEW VARIETY

Dr. Chandima Jeewandara, Director, Institute of Allergy, Immunology and Cell Biology, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, says that there are about 30 mutations related to the “s” gene in Covid’s new variant of the omicron virus variant.

Dr. Jeewandara emphasized that the booster vaccine should be taken in moderation to protect against this type of disease and that people should follow proper health instructions and exercise caution.

He also pointed out that Sri Lanka has the necessary laboratory facilities to identify this strain of the virus.

The virus has been identified in Hong Kong and Belgium in particular, and the rate of transmission is about 500% higher than that of the Delta.

South African experts say there are about 50 mutations in this strain of the virus, with 32 mutations in spike proteins alone.

Preliminary studies have shown that mutations in these spike proteins reduce the effectiveness of vaccines by up to 40%, making the virus more resistant to vaccines.
