The head of the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee has not ruled out the cancellation of the Olympic Games.
Mr. Toshiro Muto said he was keeping an eye on the number of victims and would hold talks later if necessary. Sports are scheduled to begin of Friday, but more than 70 people involved in the Games have been confirmed to be infected with Covid.
However, on the same day, International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach said the cancellation was never an option. Earlier this month Japan announced that it would continue to host the Games without spectators. When asked at a press conference if the Olympics could be canceled, Mr. Muto said, ” If there is an increase in the number of patients, we will continue to discuss it.”
Earlier this week, two South African Soccer players were diagnosed with the Corona virus while staying in an athletics village, and a volleyball player was later tested positive for the virus. To date, 71 people have been tested for the virus, including those recognized for the Tokyo Olympic and those selected for the Games.
The 2020 Olympic and Paralympics have been postponed for a year due to the Corona virus epidemic. It was the first delay in the 124-year Olympic history.
The Olympic Games will be held from July 23 to August 05 and the Paralympic Games from August 24 to September 05, but the host city of Tokyo reported 1387 patients on Tuesday. Japan has declared a state of emergency and is due to act until August 22.A spokesman for Tokyo 2020 said after Mr. Muto’s remarks on Tuesday that “the organizers are 100% focused on making the Games a success.
