The Commanding Officers of the Second Base of the Gajamuthu Special Task Force (STF) arrested two suspects while they were transporting pearls worth over Rs. 50 million for sale.
Gajamuthu and the two suspects were arrested in a raid carried out yesterday (05) near the Buddhangala crematorium in Ampara.
The two suspects arrested are aged between 39 and 40 and are residents of Ambakote and Ran Segoda.
The pearls seized by the STF weighed 84 grams, 778 milligrams, 61 milligrams 627 milligrams and 06 grams 445 milligrams respectively.
It has also been revealed that they had obtained the pearls from the Yala, Kumana and Udawalawe reserves and had killed the elephants that had entered the parks to obtain them.
The Ampara Police Station has been assigned to conduct further investigations into the incident.
