The National STD and AIDS Control Program reports that the highest number of reported cases of HIV infection among adolescents between the ages of 15 and 24 has been reported in the past five years.
Due to this it is very important to provide proper sex education to the youth, said its Director Dr. Rasanjali Hettiarachchi.
She points out that there are currently an estimated 3,700 people living with HIV in Sri Lanka, and that about 60% of those infected receive treatment and the remaining 40% roam the community without any treatment.
Dr. Rasanjali Hettiarachchi further stated that this situation has arisen due to unprotected sex and therefore young people should be given sex education to make them aware of this.
