The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has stated that 370 MW has been lost to the national grid today (20).
This situation has arisen due to the failure of the Sapugaskanda and Yugadanavi power plants due to lack of fuel.
It has been reported that the shortage will be covered by hydropower during the day today but this situation could be a hindrance to the power supply at night.
Electricity demand rose to a high of 2,470 megawatts yesterday (19) over the weekend.
Despite the current fuel crisis, 76% of it was completed by thermal power plants, including coal, and hydropower generation has been reduced to 22%.
The Kerawalapitiya Yugadanavi power plant, which can generate electricity using fuel as well as diesel, has been shut down and 270 megawatts have been lost to the national grid.
Also, the Sapugaskanda A and B power plants have been shut down again due to the depletion of fuel oil this morning and 100 megawatts have been lost to the system.
Accordingly, the Ceylon Electricity Board states that 370 MW has been lost to the national grid.
