It is reported that Cabinet approval has been received for the construction of a solar power plant floating on the water surface of Samanala Lake reservoir.
The government says that generating solar energy on the surface of reservoirs by constructing floating solar power plants has been accepted as a more suitable option for countries with limited space.
Accordingly, it has been identified that there is a good potential to implement solar energy generation projects on the surface of the reservoirs under the Ceylon Electricity Board and the Sri Lanka Mahaweli Authority and approximately 150-200 megawatts of floating solar photovoltaics on the surface area of approximately 100 hectares of the Samanalewawa Reservoir under the Ceylon Electricity Board. The government says that it has been confirmed that it can be used for the construction of a power plant.
