After Resolution 423 (V) was adopted, inviting all states and interested organizations to adopt December 10 as Human Rights Day each year, the formal beginning of Human Rights Day has been active since 1950.
When the Declaration is adopted by the General Assembly, it declares it to be a “common standard of achievement for all nations and all nations,” and individuals and societies must seek to gain their universal and effective recognition through “national and international progressive measures.” .
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights describes a wide range of fundamental rights and freedoms that we all enjoy. It guarantees the rights of all persons everywhere, regardless of nationality, place of residence, gender, national or ethnic origin, religion, language or any other condition.
Although the Declaration is not a binding document, it has inspired more than 60 human rights standards, an international standard. It further strengthens the consensus of all member states of the United Nations on the fundamental human rights enshrined in today’s Declaration and emphasizes the relevance of human rights to our daily lives.
