In the past six weeks, about fifty school buildings have collapsed in Galle and Matara districts and the children and teachers who studied in these buildings have been sent to other schools, Southern Province Education Secretary Mr. Ranjith Yapa said yesterday (08).
He mentioned that some of the collapsed buildings should be completely removed, some of them are at a level where they can be restored, and money will be allocated for the construction of new buildings under World Bank assistance.
He also stated that it is possible to construct a new building within a period of two months.
He further said that some of the collapsed buildings are fifty or sixty years old, and new buildings have been built under the projects implemented by the Ministry of Education in the past, but no attention has been paid to repairing such buildings, and if such attention had been paid, such destruction would not have occurred. is
