It is reported that Ceylon Sugar Company has stated that it is currently conducting research to introduce new hybrid sugarcane varieties that can be used in the future to increase local sugar production, and is currently working to increase the amount of sugarcane cultivation land and increase local production.
Its operations officer Mr. Calum Priyankara stated that the four government-owned sugar factories including Sewanagala and Palwatta currently produce only 20% of the country’s sugar requirement, and the remaining 80% is imported into the country annually.
