Dr. Dimuthu Amarasinghe, Medical Superintendent of Elpitiya Base Hospital, said that due to the malfunctioning of both the elevators at the Elpitiya Base Hospital, all the surgeries scheduled for today (20) have been postponed.
Female and male wards are located in the three-storied building of this hospital and the patients admitted to these wards as well as the patients referred for scheduled surgeries are carried around using these elevators.
However, since both these elevators suddenly stopped working last night, it has become difficult to move the patients around.
A situation has arisen where patients who are taken to the salon especially for surgery cannot be carried around after sedation.
Due to this, all surgeries scheduled to be performed today have been postponed, said the hospital superintendent, Dr. Dimuthu Amarasinghe.
Dr. Dimuthu Amarasinghe said that the relevant elevator company has been informed about this and they believe that they will restore these two machines very soon.
The hospital superintendent said that the company has been carrying out the maintenance work of these two elevator machines without any deficiency so far.
