President Ranil Wickramasinghe made a special statement in the Parliament regarding the comprehensive financial facility given to Sri Lanka by the International Monetary Fund and the relevant documents have been tabled in the Parliament by the President.
Commenting further on this, the President,
“I took over a country on fire on July 9. A country in chaos. A country that cannot hold hope for the future. A country that has officially declared bankruptcy. A country that declared inflation up to 73%. It is a country where people suffer for days in fuel and gas queues. A country where schools are closed. A country where electricity is cut for 10-12 hours a day. A country where there is no fertilizer for farmers to cultivate. A country where law and order has gone wild. A country where outsiders were occupying government offices by force. A country where gangs attacked everywhere. A country where the houses of rivals are on fire. A country where many people were killed.
No one wanted to take responsibility in such a background. Some pushed back. Some asked to see the horoscope. Some slipped away. Some were afraid. I was asked when no one came forward to take responsibility. I accepted the challenge unconditionally. I had no power in the parliament. I had no MPs. The only strength I had was the belief that I could recover my beloved country where I was born, brought up and raised.
When taking on this serious challenge, I only had the confidence built on past experiences. I accepted the challenge with the idea that even if I fall, the country will not fall.”
