Today (28) more than a thousand trade unions in Sri Lanka have organized massive protests as well as protest marches. They are demanding the resignation of the President and the government of Sri Lanka. Commodity prices in Sri Lanka have risen sharply so far as fuel, gas, electricity and essential commodities. These protests are urging the government to step down if it fails to control them properly.
The struggle began in earnest on the 31st in front of the President’s official residence in Mirihana. The situation escalated into mass protests as Sri Lankan security forces cracked down on peaceful protesters. By now, it has spread to the point where state governance is inactive. Even politics has been destabilized by the protests.
The agitations started by the general public in Chisinau have now spread to the state trade unions. At the same time, while the general public is disgusted with the public service, the trade unions are also going on strike and oppressing the general public. Although they engage in trade union struggles chanting slogans against the government, it is the ordinary people who do not receive their monthly salaries who suffer.
Today, all ports, health, postal services, public transport, investment zones, banks, education and other institutions are participating in this massive strike. However, only the health sector has decided to provide assistance until around 12-02 noon. Strikes and agitations are currently taking place in all parts of the country. The protests are still taking place in major cities. As we compile this article, thousands of workers representing the Koggala Free Investment Zone and the Katunayake Investment Zone are still protesting.
Shops have been closed in major cities across the country since this morning, and black flags have been hoisted in front of shops in some cities. Many cities are sparsely populated and many other cities are deserted. With the exception of hospitals, the entire public administration has collapsed and ordinary people continue to suffer. Ordinary people who went to government institutions in their area to do certain things have to return empty-handed. A large number of people who came to government institutions in the Colombo area from afar were in great distress.
Meanwhile, they started their march in front of the Maradana Technical Junction, where the National Trade Union Center is located. Protests have already begun in other areas. The number of protests is so great that hundreds can be mentioned here.
We will submit a full report tomorrow on all the special protests taking place across the country today, and arrangements have been made to publish from time to time any special events that may take place today.
