Sri Lanka is currently experiencing a severe drought due to the severe economic crisis. Power outages occur for several hours a day due to insufficient fuel stocks and rapid drop in water levels in hydropower reservoirs. Sources from the Ceylon Electricity Board say that the power cut which is currently six and a half hours a day could increase to ten hours a day next week.
A CEB spokesman said that water levels in all hydropower reservoirs in the country had dropped sharply.
According to him, some reservoirs will be able to generate electricity for several more days depending on the water level.
Power generation at the Kerawalapitiya Fuel Power Plant has to be temporarily suspended today due to a shortage of fuel for the power plant.
