Geologists point out that there is a risk of groundwater depletion in Sri Lanka due to large-scale deforestation over the years.
However, there has been talk for years about the massive deforestation in Sri Lanka, but there has been no focus on afforestation. Also, the people themselves will not see a future and the future of the same people will be affected by the shortage of water. But they will not be able to find a solution for it temporarily and they will routinely blame the existing governments when water is scarce.
Commenting on the risk of water sources drying up, Upul Wickramaratne, North Western Provincial Manager, Underground Networks Division, National Network Supply and Drainage Board revealed at a media briefing in Wariyapola.
