It is reported that the Sri Lanka Medical Association stated that more than 30,000 dengue cases were diagnosed this year alone.
It is mentioned that 50% of these patients are reported from the Western Province and 15 dengue deaths have been reported in the past period.
Dr. Lahiru Kodithuvakku, Assistant Secretary of the Sri Lanka Medical Association, gave further comments.
“In the first few days of May alone, nearly 700 dengue cases have been reported from the whole island. The highest number of cases are reported from Colombo and Gampaha districts. Dengue is in a high risk situation in Gampaha district. In addition, dengue risk situation is also occurring in Kalutara and Batticaloa districts. Almost 50% of the dengue patients reported from the island are reported from the Western Province. We definitely expect an increase in dengue patients during the upcoming rainy season. This increase will start at a high level. Because of this, if we do not control this situation properly sometimes. Sometimes it can translate into an epidemic situation.”
