It is reported that during a special search operation carried out yesterday (11) by the Navy in the sea area near Mattathiw Island in the Kalpitiya lagoon, four suspects were arrested along with 2 dinghies carrying a stock of 551 kg of beedi leaf which they tried to illegally bring to Sri Lanka through the lagoon.
These two dinghies have been inspected by the Sri Lanka Naval Ship Vijaya Institute belonging to the North West Naval Command, and the beedi leaves packed in 21 bags have been found there.
It is further reported that the suspects are between the ages of 17 and 27 and are residents of Kalpitiya area and they are to be handed over to Katunayake Customs Prevention Office for further legal proceedings.
