It is reported that five people, including a 21-year-old mother, were arrested for selling a one-day-old baby in Tangalla area to a couple in Urubokka area for adoption.
The mother asked the couple who sold the child for adoption to give her child back, but the couple refused the mother’s request. Later, the mother filed a police complaint against the concerned couple. The police arrested the concerned couple and further investigations into the incident revealed that the baby’s father had left his wife while she was pregnant. It is reported that the police preliminary investigation has revealed that the concerned couple has borne all the expenses of going to the clinics and for other examination activities starting from about five months after the birth of the baby, and the concerned couple has also arranged for the child to be admitted to a private hospital in Matara for delivery.
It is said that the family health worker of the area was informed that the baby could not be adopted due to the abandonment of the baby’s father and the baby was given to the concerned couple.
Accordingly, the Urubokka Police has announced that five suspects, including the mother who sold the baby, have been arrested in connection with the incident.
