The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Aviation has planned to develop the airport inside Higuranketha Air Force Base as an international civil airport and it is reported that the Air Force is currently carrying out its administrative and operational activities.
In this regard, a discussion has been held under the chairmanship of the Minister of Ports, Navigation and Aviation, Mr. Nimal Siripala de Silva, in which the existing 2287 meter long runway will be extended by 2800 meters, an access road will be constructed for this purpose, an air navigation system will be set up, and an aircraft yard will be constructed. Construction, construction of an air traffic control tower, construction of a passenger terminal etc. have been discussed.
It is said that this decision will make it easier for foreign tourists coming to cities like Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura, Sigiriya and Dambulla.
