In the Mannar district, 1600 hectares of land has been cultivated as an additional crop of mung beans and it is reported that an unexpected large income has been received from it.
Because there is not enough lake water to grow rice fields, mung beans have been grown as an additional food crop in those rice fields.
In this regard, the Assistant Director of Agriculture stated that mung beans are being sold in pods and the farmers of Mannar have 900 metric tons of such pods, and the mung bean farmers in Mannar have been able to sell a kilo of mung beans for between 800-950 rupees. And the women of Mannar who buy these pods as a means of daily livelihood turn green beans into green beans and one woman earns between 4000-5000 rupees per day.
Also, it is reported that a group including Minister of State for Rural Economy and District Development Committee Chairman Kader Mastan has gone to Mannar to observe the mung bean cultivation and production in Mannar.
