It is reported that President Ranil Wickramasinghe has said that steps will be taken to send a ship of the Sri Lanka Navy to the Red Sea against the Houthi militants.
The President made these comments while attending the “Shilpa Abhimani 2023” Presidential Handicraft Awards held at the Sirimavo Bandaranaike Memorial Exhibition Center in Colombo.
Mr. Ranil Wickramasinghe, who further commented there,
“There is a war in Ukraine, there are more wars in Gaza, and the prices of those goods may increase. Already in the Red Sea, shipping has actually stopped because the Houthis are firing missiles at the ships. If these ships go around South Africa instead of coming from the Red Sea, the cost of goods will increase. Therefore, we have also agreed against that Houthi program. Send a ship from the Sri Lanka Navy to the Red Sea to protect these. When such a ship is sent, it costs 250 million rupees to keep it for two weeks. We are in difficult places. It needs to be protected.”
