It is reported that the United States has vetoed the United Nations Security Council’s request for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
Foreign media reports indicate that 13 other members voted in favor of a draft resolution submitted by the United Arab Emirates, with Britain abstaining.
The vote was taken by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to formally warn the 15-member council of a global threat from the two-month-long war, and Gaza’s health ministry says more than 17,480 people have been killed in Israeli attacks.
Israel has also stated that 1,200 people have been killed and 240 people have been taken hostage by Hamas attacks.
