It is reported that the Minister of State for Provincial Councils and Local Government Mr. Janaka Wakkambura stated that the Ministry of Provincial Councils and Local Government has decided to stop giving money for the activities of local government bodies and that complaints are continuously being received from some officials of local government bodies that they are not providing proper public service. .
The minister said that these officials get their travel expenses, overtime allowances etc. from the money of the council, and that the provincial councils and the ministry of local government conducted a survey on the efficiency of the local government institutions in the past few days, and thus they are working to select the best municipality, city council and local council. was mentioned.
Accordingly, those local government bodies will be evaluated in January of next year (2024) and an example will be given.
He stated that they are working to rank all the local government bodies, and accordingly, they are going to investigate the local government bodies that are not performing proper public service and provide the necessary facilities and training to increase their efficiency.
The Minister further commented that the Ministry will provide the necessary guidance and facilities for the upliftment of local government bodies with less facilities, and that local government bodies with abundant facilities such as the Colombo Municipal Council do not need facilities from the government, even though the local government bodies currently receive tax revenue. Their salaries are paid by the government.
The minister also stated that after bringing every local government institution to the level where it can be run independently in the future, those institutions should seek their own income and run independently.
