It is reported that the Pension Department stated that they will have to face a financial crisis in the payment of pensions by the year 2028 or 2030.
In this regard, the opposition leader’s office stated that this information was revealed in a committee meeting held with the officials of the pension department under the chairmanship of opposition leader Mr. Sajith Premadasa.
Mr. Sajith Premadasa, the leader of the opposition, questioned the relevant officials about whether a pension payment crisis would arise in the future, and they said,
“We have not done a complete technical study, but according to our calculations, the country will face a pension payment crisis again by 2028-2030. There are already 7 lakh pensioners. They need approximately 27 billion to pay their monthly pension. Besides, the government is paying 300 crores monthly as compensation and allowances to the deceased in the armed forces and the police. It is actually a bit late as the payment of gratuity is being postponed. Monthly pensions are being paid continuously.”
