It is reported that the price of an egg has been increased to 58 rupees.
Although the price of an egg was reduced to 40 rupees a few weeks ago, the price of an egg has once again been raised to 58 rupees.
Bakeries claim that they buy an egg at a wholesale price of Rs 60 and poultry farm owners have increased the price of eggs.
But the Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industries, Mahinda Amaraweera, said that a group of middlemen who stored eggs in cold storages have increased the prices of eggs.
The minister has also said that some action will have to be taken in the future to control the rapidly rising egg prices.
