The opposition leader said that the increase in the 2000 rupees nutrition bag to 4500 rupees given to pregnant mothers should be appreciated but it is limited to mothers whose monthly income is less than 50000 rupees and due to this, many mothers including government employees have been cut from this subsidy.
Opposition Leader Mr. Sajith Premadasa said this while addressing Parliament today (8).
The opposition leader said that such a subsidy cut is not appropriate in such a time of hyperinflation and to provide this subsidy to around 150,000 pregnant mothers, it is 675-700 million rupees per month, which is an amount of 8 billion rupees annually. He also said that UNICEF is already giving 6750 rupees to 1 lakh five thousand children under 2 years of age in 7 districts.
Therefore, opposition leader Mr. Sajith Premadasa requested that this allowance of 4500 rupees be given to all pregnant mothers in the country from or after Women’s Day.
