There has been a long discussion in the National Security Sectoral Oversight Committee about the growth of underworld-related activities and it has been revealed in the committee that personnel working in the armed forces are showing a growth in committing crimes.
According to the report, there is some weakness in the identification of criminals and if there are police station commanders who are capable of identifying criminals in their areas, it can be prevented before the crime occurs. Therefore, attention has been focused on identifying capable police station commanders and sending them to the respective areas for service. .
There was a long discussion in the committee regarding the control of drugs and the police officers have pointed out that the drug traffickers are working to accustom the school children to the use of drugs by asking them to use pills.
They further said that the first thing to be done in drug control is to prevent the entry of drugs into the country and the necessity of strict implementation of laws such as confiscation of property of drug traffickers has also been discussed in the committee.
The chairman recalled that the country loses a large number of lives due to road accidents and that 29,000 war heroes died in the 30-year war in this country and 27,000 people died in road accidents in the last 10 years alone.
Accordingly, the chairman has given instructions to purchase the necessary equipment as soon as possible and provide it to the police stations all over the island to identify the drivers who are driving under the influence of drugs.
It was pointed out before the police committee that there has been an increase in property robberies and most of them are due to the carelessness of people and the police pointed out that it is very important for people to pay more attention to their houses, buildings and other properties.
Also, the Sectoral Monitoring Committee on National Security has focused on certain people getting the services of private security guards for their own security.
That was when the committee met in Parliament recently (22) under the chairmanship of Member of Parliament Mr. Sarath Weerasekera.
The members of the committee have pointed out that the public is facing some oppressive situations due to some people who are escorted by private security guards.
The senior police officers said that legally the police cannot intervene in the personal security of a person.
However, the committee pointed out that since the personnel of those private security services use weapons, some regulation is necessary.
The Committee decided to give instructions to the Ministry of Defense to prepare the criteria related to the regulation of people getting private security services.
Members of Parliament Rauf Hakeem, Chandima Weerakkodi, Channa Jayasumana, Charles Nirmalanathan, Pradeep Undugoda, Sudarshan Denipitiya as well as the Secretary of the Ministry of Public Security and the Inspector General of Police have participated in this event.
