Justice Minister Wijedasa Rajapaksa made a controversial statement about the law and police behavior of the country, making the unofficial stories in the society about the procedure followed by the Sri Lanka Police regarding drugs a reality.
Minister of Justice, Dr. Wijayadasa Rajapaksa says that due to the mistakes made by the police, attention has been paid to amend the law related to the prosecution of drugs.
The Minister says that people are making accusations regarding the procedure followed by the police in prosecuting drug cases and it has been confirmed that they are mostly true.
Minister of Justice, Dr. Vijayadasa Rajapaksa,
“Every now and then one sample can be wrong. Some policies send 20-30 samples incorrectly. Things that are not drugs have been sent as toxic drugs. This law is misused. There should be some reforms in the law. Even if a suspect is presented with Panadol drug, he is remanded as a suspect in possession of drugs. After many months, when the taster’s reports come, they do not contain toxic drugs. People say that they are making false accusations to take revenge. There is some truth in that. Strict monitoring will be done in the coming weeks.”
Many criminals who are being punished in prison for various crimes are suffering from various diseases. A special committee is appointed to look into them and give recommendations for their release.
