A three-judge Supreme Court bench sentenced retired Army Major lawyer Ajith Prasanna to four years of rigorous imprisonment for contempt of court.
In addition, the judge also imposed a fine of 3 lakh rupees and in case of failure to pay the fine, it was also mentioned in the order that six months imprisonment will be imposed.
A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court delivered the verdict by a majority of Justices Preethi Padman Surasena and S. Thurai Raja.
Member Judge Gamini Amarasekara announced his decision and stated that he also found the accused guilty of the relevant charge.
Accordingly, the judge said that he will sentence him to 30 months imprisonment and a fine of 3 lakh rupees and if he fails to pay the fine, he will also be sentenced to 6 months imprisonment.
On January 19, 2020, the Attorney General presented this charge sheet against Ajith Prasanna, accusing him of insulting the court by criticizing a decision of a five-member Supreme Court panel while participating in a press conference.
