The former chairman of the Election Commission, Mr. Mahinda Deshapriya, while commenting on this year’s local government election, has stated that the election is not very appropriate.
Commenting on the current situation in the country and the election, he has mentioned that although it is appropriate to hold the election on April 25, it will not be a very easy situation.
Former Chairman Mr. Mahinda Deshapriya giving further comments.
“If it is not possible to hold this election on April 25, if it takes too long, after giving our delimitation report, if the president gazettes it, then a review committee is set up and it goes, then the parliament should decide whether or not there is a vote from these nominations. No matter what the situation, it is not appropriate for a vote to be delayed beyond the stipulated time. It is not appropriate to run these councils for a long time under the control of officials. I hope that these polls will be held at least within three to four months. April 25 would be good. But now it seems that it is difficult to keep. Because even for the postal vote, the government does not receive the ballots from the printing press.”
