A video showing an arrested suspect being beaten is currently circulating on social media.
However, the police officers have no legal right or power to attack or threaten an arrested suspect in this way. Also, as mentioned in this video, even if this suspect escaped from the police jeep, a police officer has not been given legal authority to attack a person in any way.
Such brutal behavior of the police officers is very harmful to the destruction and existence of the Sri Lanka Police Department and they who are paid by the public have no right to attack the public at all. If the suspect escaped from the police jeep, it is not the fault of the police officers themselves but the arrested suspect.
Police officers should know that any arrested suspect is trying to escape and he is not a suspect or a criminal. Therefore, the police officers who attack him should immediately implement the law and if the law is not implemented, the police department will no longer be able to recover.
Also, in this video, other police officers can be seen threatening the public who protested against this attack. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the Inspector General of Police and the senior police officers in charge of the area related to this incident not to allow such actions to become precedents without being punished.
Similarly, a young man in Opanayake area was also assaulted by a police officer and the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Ratnapura District has taken action to bring the police officer who assaulted him to court and enforce the law against him.
It is the responsibility of the police to protect any suspect until he is convicted by the court. The law should be implemented against all the officers mentioned in this video as the police officers do not have any right to attack or threaten them in this way.
