The Deputy Commissioner General of the Inland Revenue Department said that it is not mandatory for Sri Lankans and dual citizens who are studying abroad to obtain a ‘TIN’ number. Saman Shanta is reported to have said.
He has also said that if a person in a foreign country earns any income from Sri Lanka (those who earn interest income, rental income or any other form of income from fixed deposits in banks and the income exceeds 12 lakh rupees per year) they should definitely get the TIN number.
He said this at a press conference held at the Government Information Department.
He said that there is a lot of interest among people to get the tin number and that the Inland Revenue Department is going to network computers with the Motor Vehicle Department to get information related to vehicle registration.
The Deputy Commissioner also said that since the Inland Revenue Department is computer networked with Sri Lanka Customs, the department receives all the information related to imports and exports.
He has also said that it is possible to identify tax evaders who are hiding by networking with all the institutions.
