Member of Parliament Ajith Mannapperuma said that 27,000 crore rupees are spent to import 45,000 tons of plastic into Sri Lanka every year.
According to reports, it takes about 700 years for this plastic to decompose, the MP said today (27) in Parliament.
He has also said that if these 750,000 tons of plastic are not recycled, there will be no soil in this country for many years to come.
Mannapperuma has also said that if recycling is not done properly, more plastic pieces will float in the sea than fish in the sea.
Mannapperuma said that although four and a half lakh tons of plastic are imported per year, about 144,000 tons of it is collected again, but even if that is done, less than fifty thousand tons of plastic is used for recycling.
