Trade Minister Naleen Fernando stated that the price of essential goods will further decrease during the festive season and he said that even if the importers are at a disadvantage, the benefit should be given to the public.
“At this time, the importers have suffered losses. Same goes for businessmen. Therefore, the importers reduce the price for the goods to come and give that relief. We have to face this situation when the price goes up as well as when the price goes down. But we say that the advantage of this should be given to the customer. Therefore, without importing this directly, the price of essential goods will be reduced in such a way as to give us more advantage to the customer. Looking at the last month, a kilo of sugar decreased by Rs 25-30. Lentils were reduced. Potato and onion prices went down. Therefore, we think that the prices during the festive season will decrease in these few weeks and consumers will be able to get essential goods at a lower price.”
