The Minister of Health and Industry, Dr. Ramesh Pathirana, has instructed the officials of the Ministry of Health to immediately assign doctors to the hospitals that are closed and are about to be closed all over the island.
According to reports, it was during a discussion held today (27) with the representatives of the Government Medical Officers’ Association and it was revealed that at present nearly 40 government hospitals are closed and nearly 100 hospitals are about to be closed.
The minister has mentioned that a special committee should be appointed under the chairmanship of the Director General of Health Services by making the members of the Government Medical Officers’ Association members of the said committee and the necessary medical personnel should be assigned to these hospitals as soon as possible and necessary steps should be taken to resume the patient treatment services.
It has been revealed that the hospitals which are currently closed without doctors and are about to close are in the districts of the Northern Province, Puttalam and Nuwara Eliya.
This situation has arisen due to matters such as doctors going abroad, retiring, getting transfers, leaving the service and also discussing the transfer of doctors, training of doctors, assignment of doctors to hospitals based on the need of service, transfers of medical administrative officers.
