Due to the dry weather conditions prevailing in the western slopes of the central mountains, the water levels of the Maussakale Reservoir have dropped drastically and it is reported that the ruins of various religious places that were under the reservoir have emerged.
During the construction of the Maussakale Reservoir, the old town of Maskeliya as well as its religious places were submerged and now with the lowering of the water level in the reservoir, the ruins of the old Maskeliya town including the Buddha statue and the Hindu temple have emerged.
