It is reported that the Railway Department has decided to install security gates for 400 railway crossings.
Railway General Manager H.M.K.W.Bandara mentioned that 1200 employees will be recruited for that purpose.
It is stated that the people recruited under the government’s multi-tasking scheme are planned to be seconded for that purpose.
The General Manager of Railways has stated that in the discussion held yesterday with the Ministry of Finance, the agreement was obtained for these recruitments.
The highest number of crossings without safety gates are on Puttalam Road and Coastal Railway.
Although the police had installed gates for some of these crossings, the General Manager of Railways has stated that after the recent accident at the Puttalam Arachchikattuwa Maiyava railway crossing, the police has informed that the gates will be removed.
