The leprosy control unit says that nearly 1,300 leprosy patients have been identified in the last few months of this year.
According to reports, 1,256 patients have been seen from different parts of the island between January and October, Dr. Prasad Ranaweera, director of the unit, has said.
The highest number of leprosy cases have been reported from Colombo district and the number is 256, 138 cases from Gampaha district, 130 cases from Batticaloa district and 92 cases from Kalutara district.
Specialist Dr. Prasad Ranaweera had further said that among the leprosy cases that have been reported so far, 131 children under 14 years of age have also been identified from different parts of the island.
Most of them have been reported from Colombo district and the number is 39.
Districts including Gampaha, Batticaloa and Kalutara have also identified more cases of childhood leprosy.
