The Urban Development Authority has planned to implement development projects worth 3400 million rupees including a “cloud garden” in the vicinity of the Methotamulla Garbage Hill, but it is revealed that no investor has come forward to take over the work so far.
The Meethotamulla garbage dump collapsed in 2017 due to illegal waste disposal. As a result, eleven people have gone missing and another thirty two people have lost their lives.
Spread over an area of eight hectares, the height of this dump is 48 meters.
It was also discussed in the Colombo District Coordinating Committee that due to not making proper use of this garbage dump, there may be a risk of collapse again.
Its officials say that the landfill has been made into five floors and its height has been reduced to thirty three meters and the housing development authority has planned to develop the landfill and carry out several development projects including a museum and a housing complex.
Since no development project has been observed in the Garbage Hill so far, the Colombo District Coordinating Committee has proposed that if a solar power project is implemented there, it will be possible to bring in foreign investors.
