It is reported that Mr. Poj Hornpol, Ambassador of Thailand to Sri Lanka, met Mr. Neranjan Wijayaratne, former Diyawadana Nilame, and said that the Thai government is paying attention to providing an elephant hospital with facilities to Sri Lanka.
The Thai Ambassador to Sri Lanka has stated here that if proper treatment had been given to Muthuraja, Muthuraja’s elephant could have been kept in this country, Muthuraja’s problem was known later and if it had been known first, it could have been resolved.
Also, the former Diyawadana Nilame has requested the ambassador that Sri Lanka does not have the necessary facilities to treat elephants when they fall ill, and that Sri Lanka needs an elephant hospital with all facilities like the elephant hospitals in Thailand, and to help it at the state level.
The ambassador has emphasized that he will do his best to provide maximum support at the state level, and that a team from Thailand will soon come and conduct a study in this regard.
The ambassador has further mentioned that necessary facilities should be provided to treat the tame elephants as well as the sick elephants in the forests.
