It is reported that Professor Wasantha Athukorala of Peradeniya University’s Department of Economics said that the restructuring of domestic debt can have a socio-economic impact.
The professor who commented further in this regard,
“Currently, Sri Lanka’s total debt is nearly 92 billion dollars. Out of that, 47 billion dollars are domestic debt. About 36 billion dollars are foreign debt. The government and the central bank are currently going to urgently restructure this domestic debt in some way. In this domestic debt Most of them are treasury bills and treasury bonds. These are the money of the people of this country. If this amount is cut in some way, there will definitely be a socio-economic impact in the society. It is possible to affect people in a more severe way.. because the economy shrinks.”
