Today (15) the Thai Pongal festival is celebrated by Hindus to give a bountiful harvest.

Meanwhile, President Ranil Wickramasinghe, in a message on the occasion of the Thai Pongal festival, said that the Thai Pongal festival, which symbolizes fertility and gratitude, is not only a harvest but also a celebration of new beginnings.
The President has also said that it is a pleasure to celebrate Thai Pongal at a time when the country is embarking on the path of victory in view of the unlimited commitment made for two years.
Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena has said that this harvest festival is a reflection of the life of Deya, where the farmers, who believe in the traditional way of life connected with nature, give thanks to the sun for a rich harvest.
In the Thai Pongal message, the Prime Minister pointed out that it will stimulate the active concept for food security and rural revival in view of the current conditions.
Mr. Sajith Premadasa, the leader of the opposition, in a Thai Pongal message, said that he would request all the Sri Lankans of the world to take the blessings of nature on this Thai Pongal day and join a new journey to become the number one country in the world.
