It is reported that Dr. Gotabhaya Ranasinghe, a cardiologist at the Colombo National Hospital, stated that the number of heart patients reported daily in Sri Lanka has increased rapidly.
He points out that about 170 heart patients are reported daily.
Specialist Dr. Gotabhaya Ranasinghe has expressed these views while attending a press conference held in Colombo.
“There has been a rapid increase in the incidence of heart disease in Sri Lanka in the last 10 years. About 166-170 heart attacks occur per day. That is what the current data shows us. This amount is actually increasing in the last few years. We often see that increase. When examining patients on a daily basis. And we have data on the number of heart attacks in the Western Province. Looking at that data, we can see the trend of heart disease increasing in the last few years.”
Specialist Dr. Gotabhaya Ranasinghe says that the main reason for the increase in heart patients is the deficiencies in the diet.
“Heart attacks have increased because of our lifestyle. Because of the change in our lifestyle. Especially the food we use. There is a big difference in food. They have undergone rapid change over the past few years. The way we eat and drink, our lifestyle has changed a lot. That difference is the reason for the increase in heart attacks in Sri Lanka. In particular, the amount of sugar contained in the food we eat is very high. One person in Sri Lanka uses about 30 kg of sugar per year. The other is that we use oil for most foods. Most of the food we eat contains carbohydrates. That means the diet itself is the main influence.”
