Two of the world’s largest container ships arrived at the port of Colombo a fortnight ago.
400 meters in length and 61.3 meters in width, these twin ships are the first two sisters of the 24346 TEU class belonging to Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A (MSC) of Switzerland, which consists of 10 ships.
All these 10 ships are to be manufactured in 3 Yoda shipyards of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC). All these ships are powered by 71,000 kW WinGD – 11 X92 (formerly Wartsila – RT) designed by CSSC’s own WinGD company. / Flex ) engines.
The crown of the world’s largest container ship or The flagship of world container fleet was held last year by the Ever Alot (24004 TEU) class of Evergreen Company, which was transferred to MSC Tessa (24116 TEU) and OOCL Spain (24188 TEU) earlier this year. MSC Irina and MAC Loreto duo have been able to bring that volume up to 24346 TEU.
These ships also operate between China and Western Europe, the only service that is capable of operating them, and this giant class of ships will also be seen coming and going to the port of Colombo in the future.
